Howard Sterling Whitley diaries, 1904-1959.

Diaries kept by patent lawyer Howard S. Whitley during his youth in Leonia, N.J. (1904-17), and later years in Boston (1933-59). Whitley recorded events in his daily routine at school in Leonia and as a student at Columbia Law School, including his attendance of meetings of the Fortnighters Club, a young men's social club in Leonia. In Boston, he wrote of his hiking trips and attendance at theaters, lectures, and night courses. Also, brief mention of historical events such as the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. A brief description of the destruction caused in Boston by the hurricane of 1938, with photographs, was made by Whitley's wife, Helen Whitley (series II, vol. 12). Also included are two minute books of the Fortnighters Club (1908-13 and 1916-17).

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James (lawyer, financier) and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt. He married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, 1905, and had six children: Anna, James, Franklin, Elliott, Franklin Jr., John. He received his B.A. from Harvard in 1904 and later attended Columbia University Law School. Roosevelt was admitted to the Bar in 1907 and worked for the Carter, Ledyard, and Milburn firm in New York City from 1907 to 19...
